The elevator industry from a sustainability perspective

On December 7th, during the Vietnam Elevator Expo 2023, an International Seminar was held titled “Sustainable Development Trend of Future Elevator Industry” organized by the Vietnam Elevator Association (VNEA).

Speaking at the opening, the President of the VNEA, Mr. Nguyen Hai Duc, stated that sustainable development requires balancing the benefits of the State, the Consumer Community, and the Business Community.

To achieve this goal, VNEA aims to increase consumer awareness and propose standards and regulations to guide the elevator business in the ecosystem.

The seminar focused on the latest research and trends in the development of green elevators that are sustainable and eco-friendly. Additionally, it aimed to address operational safety problems in the new era.

The event was attended by representatives from state management agencies, associations, organizations, and enterprises in the elevator industry and related fields. Leading domestic and international elevator experts from the Pacific Asia Lift and Escalator Association (PALEA); The European Federation for Elevator Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EFESME); and VNEA also provided their participation and advice.

Graham Worthington, President of the Pacific Asia Lift and Escalator Association presented at the seminar

Opening the seminar was the presentation by Graham Worthington – President of the Pacific Asia Lift and Escalator Association, with the main content revolving around the development potential and major challenges of the global elevator industry.

Analyzing the Vietnamese elevator market, Graham Worthington appreciated the potential as well as the development of this sector in Vietnam. Citing data from Worldometer, the PALEA President said the driving force behind Vietnam’s elevator industry comes from the rapidly increasing urbanization rate of nearly 40% by 2023 forecast to increase to 50% by 2030.

The President of PALEA has highlighted the challenges faced by the Vietnam elevator industry also worldwide during a period of rapid growth. These include human resource management, monitoring of existing elevator systems, and developing sustainable green technology to minimize negative environmental impact.

“To ensure a sustainable future for all, we need to minimize our negative impact on the environment from the present moment. The reduction of emissions, energy saving, or the use of sustainable materials in the elevator industry is also one of the important issues in the current and future development of the elevator industry” Graham Worthington emphasized.

In addition to the comments of the President of PALEA, Massimo Bezzi – President of the European Federation for Elevator Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, also presented and updated the projects for the sustainable development of elevators in the European region and trends worldwide.

President of EFESME - Mr Massimo Bezzi.

Massimo Bezzi expressed that energy efficiency, ensuring the principle of a circular economy or the right to be repaired, etc., are the main objectives in projects promoting sustainable industrial development in the European region, as well as in many other regions of the world.

The EFESME President said, “The commitments and efforts of countries to achieve these goals will also have a significant impact on the development of industry in general, including elevators.”

The approach to a specific engineering problem is the data transmission method, called CAN (Controller Area Network), Mr. Nguyen Duc Hanh – Director of the Vietnam Institute of Lift Engineering Application, provided an insight into the trend of sustainable development of the elevator industry in particular and the global industry in general.

According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Hanh, the data transmission method initially used in the automobile industry, called CAN, has now been adopted by other industries, such as elevators. The CAN method has led to the development of various communication protocols, including CANopen.

“CANopen is an open data transfer protocol – representing standardization that is accessible to all businesses. However, applied technologies researched by businesses themselves bring the potential to develop and create superior products, new and pioneering inventions”, Dr. Nguyen Duc Hanh shares.
