Solicitation of Comments on the Draft National Standard for the Elevator Industry

At 13:00 on 4 December 2025, the Vietnam Standards and Quality Institute, in collaboration with the Vietnam Elevator Association and Vinexad, will hold the International Seminar: Solicitation of Comments on the Draft National Standard for the Vietnam Elevator Industry, an accompanying event of the Vietnam Elevator Expo 2025.

The seminar is attended by leaders and representatives of domestic regulatory and national research institutions, including the Vietnam Institute of Standards and Quality (under the Commission for the Standards, Metrology and Quality of Viet Nam), the Department of Employment (Ministry of Home Affairs), along with other relevant specialized units.

On the international side, the seminar convenes leaders and experts from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety of Korea and the Korea Elevator Safety Agency, as well as international associations and organizations such as the Pacific Asia Lift and Escalator Association, the Korea Lift Association, the Korea Lift College, the Korea Lift Valley Business Council, and the China Elevator Association.

In addition to the participation of government regulatory bodies and international organizations, the seminar also draws strong interest and registrations from a wide range of domestic elevator enterprises – from manufacturing and importing to installation and maintenance – together with many FDI companies operating in Vietnam. Their presence provides practical perspectives and important voices that contribute directly to the process of finalizing the draft standard.

The urgent need for a new set of standards

According to expert assessments, the current system of Vietnam National Standards (TCVN) primarily focuses on safety requirements in the design and installation of elevators, the stage preceding their commissioning. These standards have contributed to ensuring that users receive equipment that meets safety requirements.

However, practical experience in the industry shows that the TCVN system does not yet fully cover requirements related to operation, maintenance, repair, and usage—factors that directly affect safety throughout the entire lifecycle of elevators. In the context of rapid urbanization, the increasing number of elevators, and the growing demand for professional maintenance and operation, this gap in standards urgently needs to be addressed for timely completion.

Recognizing the importance of this issue, the Technical Committee for National Standards TCVN/TC 178 “Elevators, Escalators and Passenger Conveyors” has researched and drafted a set of TCVN standards on Elevators – General Requirements for Operation, Maintenance, Repair, and Use. This forms a crucial foundation for enhancing the quality and safety of the elevator system in Vietnam.

The seminar provides an opportunity for enterprises and experts to discuss and provide feedback on the draft standard, sharing issues that arise in the practical operation, maintenance, and repair of elevators. At the same time, it serves as a platform for dialogue that brings the voices of enterprises closer to policymakers, contributing to the refinement of the draft before its official promulgation.

Alongside the consultation on the Draft TCVN ‘Elevators: General Requirements for Operation, Maintenance, Repair, and Use,’ the seminar also features presentations by international experts from various reputable agencies and organizations, sharing their experience in standardization and the development of elevator safety management systems. Specifically:

Mr. Hyoung Soon Choi – Head of the Safety Department, Korea Elevator Safety Agency

Mr. Jong Yeol Ryu – Deputy Head of the Accident Investigation Department, Korea Elevator Safety Agency

Mr. Zhang Lixiang – Secretary General of the China Elevator Association

These presentations will offer practical perspectives and lessons learned from countries with well-developed standards systems, supervision mechanisms, and elevator safety management, contributing to supporting Vietnam in the process of refining and enhancing the effectiveness of its national standards system.

The International Seminar: Solicitation of Comments on the Draft National Standard for the Vietnam Elevator Industry takes place alongside the Vietnam Elevator Expo 2025—the only and largest international exhibition for the elevator industry in Vietnam, co-organized by the Vietnam Elevator Association and VINEXAD Joint Stock Company (Ministry of Industry and Trade).

Held over three days (from December 4th to 6th, 2025), the 4th Vietnam Elevator Expo 2025 will be co-located with other leading exhibitions, including Hardware & Handtools and Home & Garden, within the framework of the Vietnam Expo International Trade Fair—the longest-running annual trade promotion event in Vietnam, chaired by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The event spans nearly 18,000 m², gathering over 1,000 booths from domestic and international enterprises, creating a space for networking and commercial cooperation across sectors ranging from residential architecture, mechanical manufacturing, and supporting industries to elevators, escalators, and related auxiliary equipment.
