Elevators and escalators are products that have become very familiar to Vietnamese people in recent years. Elevators and escalators appear everywhere such as supermarkets, office buildings, apartment buildings, metro stations, and even in households. And the demand for this product is increasing day by day. From the perspective of a global corporation with more than 110 years of experience, the Finnish enterprise KONE said: Vietnam is a potential market.

Elevator and escalator market potential in Vietnam

With a population of more than 98 million people on a total area of more than 310,000 km2, Vietnam has a population density of 317 people/ km2. In which, 38% of the population lives in urban areas (by 2020) and is expected to increase to 60% by 2050. With the population growth rate and urbanization among the top in the world, the need to install elevators and escalators for office and apartment buildings are increasing in Vietnam.

According to statistics, the annual demand for elevators and escalators in Vietnam can reach more than 10,000 units. Along with economic growth, the increasing quality of life requires the quality, safety and application of modern technology of elevators and escalators to be higher to meet the needs of users.

In recent years, the Vietnamese Government has given priority to promoting infrastructure development with many key transport projects such as metro lines in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, railway stations, airports, ports, etc. opening a potential market for elevators, escalators and passenger conveyor systems combined with intelligent monitoring systems at projects. This helps to synchronize local infrastructure with national and regional infrastructure, helping to optimize the problem of "People Flow" in urban areas, contributing to Sustainable Development.

Human resource training for elevators and escalators

One of the challenges for highly specialized businesses like the elevator industry is human resources. How can Vietnamese engineers and personnel catch up with development trends and the most advanced technical standards in the world? Therefore, KONE has pioneered in implementing training programs, transferring technology, building a high-quality human resource training center, contributing to the development of the elevator and escalator industry in Vietnam. Over the past 3 years, the company has conducted more than 1 million hours of training with 3 courses of graduates and starting jobs in the industry. The world's leading experts also conduct training courses, practical training at many levels for experts, teachers and professionals in Vietnam to ensure world quality standards.

Although there is no major in elevator engineering in the vocational education system in Vietnam, over the past 10 years, many engineers and technical students from the Universities of Industry, the Technical University, the University of Ly Tu Trong Technical College,... has matured and taken over many key positions, contributing to the development of the elevator and escalator industry in Vietnam.

KONE wishes to become a strategic partner for smart and sustainable city development in Vietnam

KONE wishes to quickly apply the most modern standards and technologies in the world to Vietnam; Traffic solutions in urban areas need to be concerned and upgraded in terms of quality, helping management agencies to synchronize and monitor to optimize infrastructure.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we clearly see the importance of safe circulation in buildings, commercial centers. Therefore, state management agencies need to arrange departments in charge of vertical circulation - especially for elevators and escalators, to help ensure the health and safety of residents and users. In addition, the development of the high-rise segment needs to be upgraded to ensure uniformity and aesthetics in architectural planning, ensuring sustainable development and synchronization with other countries in the region. Safety and quality work need to be especially enhanced through technological monitoring solutions.

“KONE's contribution to the circular economy starts with the reduction of energy, raw materials and other resources consumed in solutions and operations. Digital service transformation is a focus in the circular economy, helping to benefit customers from quality, on-time, and transparent service. In production, we optimize the use of materials with robotics and automation, as well as provide renewable energy for production. Our goal is to increase the share of green energy use to more than 50% by 2021 and have zero landfill waste from manufacturing plants by 2030.” - Mr. Bas Degeling, General Director of KONE Vietnam.
